题目: Loan Crisis Throws New Light

Investment banks have long played a part in the financial system. But the recent crisis over securities based on risky home loans has brought them new attention. Investment banks handle stocks, bonds and other securities. They underwrite new offerings. That means they take the risk of buying the securities and reselling them to the public. They also provide business advice and market research, and dealing existing securities. Investment bankers have structured some newer securities in highly complex ways. Their value could be tied to lists of stocks, or prices of goods, or as the world now knows groups of risky home loans. These mortgage backmortgage-backed securities were sold to investors worldwide as a way to spread the risk. But as more and more loans went bad, the marketsmarket collapsed. Before the nineteen thirties, the United States had no separation between traditional banking and investment banking activities. Bank holding companies could own other financial companies that would underwrite new stocks. They would also provide stockbroker services for the public. People often bought shares with money borrowed from the banks.

While the Pope and Mr. Bush differ on such issues as the Iraq war and the death penalty, they do find a common ground in opposing abortion and gay marriage. White House Press Secretary Dana PerinalPerino.

“President Bush is very excited to have the Holy Father here. One of the reasons he is so excited is because he has established a bond with him. And they have a lot, they share a lot of common values.”

The formal greeting for the German-born Pope will come on Wednesday, when thousands of people are expected to welcome him at the White House. During thehis six-day visit, the Pope is scheduled to celebrate mass at large baseball stadiums, address the United Nations, meet leaders from other religions and pray ofat the site in New York of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. James Brennan is the provost of the Catholic University.

“I think he will also bring to all Americans a very positive message of hope and love which is the essential message of Jesus Christ.”

During his trip to the United States. Pope Benedict will mark 2 personal milestones. His 81st birthday is Wednesday and Saturday will mark the third anniversary of his election as pontiff.
