慢速VOA: Boeing Protests Air Force Contract on Tankers (2/2)

Boeing offered a version of its 767 airplane for the new tankers. Northrop Grumman and EADS based their tankers on the airbus A-330. That plane is larger and would be able to carry more fuel.
There is debate about the possible effect on the American jobs because production would be split between Europe and the United States. There is also dispute about what the deal could mean for national security. In any case, Boeing says the air force change requirement in the middle of the competition.
Boeing and Airbus each had record numbers of orders last year for commercial airplanes. Demand is strong in Europe and Asia. But this week EADS reported a loss of 685,000,000 dollar last year after a profit in 2006. Airbus has had delays with its huge new A-380 passenger plane. A weak dollar also play a part in the loss.
Boeing has had its own problems with its new 787 Dreamliner. To build it, the company is using a new system of suppliers around the world. Boeing says the Dreamliner could enter service early next year. Many buyers are waiting, but the new plane has not even had its first flight, The latest progress is expected by the end of the month.

The three prime ministers came to Washington at the invitation of the President to talk about regional matters. Mr. Bush says trade and tourism top the list. The President says he also went out of his way during the session to assure the three Prime Ministers that the United States remains engaged in what he called the neighborhood.
“It was important to these leaders to know that we believed that a good, strong, healthy, vibrate neighborhood is in the interest of United States.
Two of the Caribbean leaders who took part in the meeting were recently elected to office. David Thompson of Barbados and Dean Barrow of Belize, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham of the Bahamas, the veteran of the group, spoke for the three at the end of the White House meeting.
He told reporters that he was especially interested in their discussions with President Bush on trade, specifically the fate of the package of the trade program known as the Caribbean Basin Initiative.Caribbean Basin Initiative was launched in 1983, and expanded in 2000. It currently provide 19 Caribbean countries with duty-free access to the US markets for most goods.
